Photo Blogging Challenge (January 2017): Express yourself

January 31, 2017

It’s 2017.

And January.

Where I am, it’s been pretty chilly. I went out for a walk last night and I can say it was quite brisk out. But that’s OK as it’s kind of part of living in the Northeast this time of year.

That being said — this month flew by. One month down in 2017 and it already is moving along fast. I didn’t get out as much as I wanted with the camera, but I think I got some images that can express things well enough.

This is an interesting theme for the month and I’ll look forward to seeing what others come up with. Heck, I need to get around to visit the December posts, as well as the last several days of the 20 Days of Chill. It might take me a little bit … but I will get to them out!

Anyway, the new year is here and we’re approaching a milestone for this challenge! So hopefully, you’ll keep with us and we can find a way to keep it growing!

OK, with all that out of the way, let’s get to my five for the month!

1. New lens

Obviously, I like to express myself through photography. Over the holidays, I rented a lens (8-14 wide angle/fish eye) and it was the fourth or fifth time I rented it. I know it’s not a full walk-around lens, but I love it. So instead of renting from here on out, I opted to just purchase it so it is mine. I love it.

2. Hungry, hungry hippo!

Cameron sure is growing and he expresses himself in many ways. I’d like to point out that I got him that shirt … and this game. So it’s my hope he expresses himself in many ways as he grows up. Always good to be the spoiling uncle/godfather!

3. Champion!

My niece has used soccer for a way to express herself since she was a tiny one. Her college team this year won the national championship and she received her ring. She also chose her next college for the final two years of college, so hopefully success follows.

4. Gaming

Cameron, as noted, expresses him self in several ways. Here, he’s playing a game he got for Christmas. But even better … note the cape he is wearing (superhero) and the dinosaur on his shirt. He loves being a dinosaur.

5. Nature

I love nature for photos. It’s like the world expressing itself just in time for an image!

There are my five and I look forward to seeing what others had this month!

If you took part in this month’s challenge, make sure to link up below. And for those of you who participated, make sure you try and get to other people’s blogs and comment (here, too!). Let’s continue to grow this challenge and have a strong community. Come back and check out the others who link later on, too!

Also, don’t forget to get back here Wednesday, February 1 for the February theme!

NOTE: I set up a Facebook group for those who participate in the challenge and are interested. I’ll post any announcements there and hopefully it can be a place where things are discussed and some interaction etc. You can access it here.

You’ve got me thinking about how freely children express themselves, especially the raw message phase before they learn to use words. And how, as we learn to use words, it can be harder to clearly express our feelings. I also appreciate the reminder of how important certain articles of clothing can be to the young (and those of us who are older). While our boys loved dinosaurs too, their favourite toddler shirts depicted Lego things or animals.

Looking forward to seeing more images made with your Christmas gift to yourself. Agree that fisheye isn’t a full-time walking around lens, but it helps with learning to have a unique perspective on familiar things. Love the way you framed the road and covered bridge. My experience with fisheyes is limited to the tiny clip-on for my phone camera, which I’ve played with a few times. I’ve often wondered whether every fisheye lens produces images with those black side edges and whether it’s standard practice to crop those off before printing. What are your thoughts?

It is kind of while how they express themselves, isn’t it? It’s almost a carefree way of thinking. They just say and do what they feel is best. And when they learn to use words, even better. Clothes are another way kids express themselves as they have shirts or pants or hats that are their favorites etc.

This lens has been great. It is definitely not a walk-around lens, but I’ve used it a ton and I’m happy I purchased it. I’ve used it personally and even professionally, which is fantastic and fun. I will keep experimenting with it and finding new uses for it. It’s been fun, that’s for sure!

I hope you’re having an “expressive” time with your new lens! Fish-eyes are so much fun to play with. I love the shot of your niece with her ring. Great perspective. The snow and sun are awesome and, of course, Cameron is always a highlight! Great collection of photos for the prompt.

I definitely have been. It’s been a lot of fun to have it whenever I wanted to use it. I’ve been finding different ways to use it when I can. Thanks! 😀

First of all, that lens is AWESOME!!!! I love that effect. That would be so fun to have at the beach. Secondly,, my favorite of all these photos is the ring one. What a great tribute and what a creative shot. Great job!

This lens, so far, has been worth every penny. I definitely am enjoying it! And I agree about having it at the beach. The ring finger is a favorite of mine, too! ?

Congrats on the new lens. I love the look of wide lenses. I LOVE the ring photo. It’s almost like I’m getting punched.

Thanks, Mike. The wide look is really cool and I am finding different ways to use it. And the ring photo is one I was really happy with when I took it, though it might have looked cooler if I had her near a soccer goal.

I’m glad you decided on that lens, I remember when you hired it out before. I think it’d be good for street photography aswell. I love your landscapes with the lens and is that Hungry Hippos I see?

The ring shot is a strong image which suits your niece because I think she is a strong soccer player too.

The lens definitely has some cool use possibilities. The best part is owning it so I can explore and see what I can find to do with it. Street photography would be cool with it for sure. And yes, that is hungry hungry hippos!

Self care is important. With work as stressful as Self care is important. With work as stressful as it usually is during this month, the little things can help you relax. I went this morning for a beard trim. It’s only 30-40 minutes, but it’s nice to have it done. A nice shaping, thinning it out a bit, a hot towel and a straight razor.

Nice.

In the world in which we live, little things like this can really be good for you. Maybe it’s a massage. Maybe it’s a therapy session. Maybe it’s a trip to the barber shop. But take care of yourself. It’s important.

And if you are in my area and need a trim or whatever — check out Chris (@studio11chris ) at @studio11barbersuite in Oneonta. Well worth it!

I hate being in front of the camera, but also realize sometimes it's not the worst thing in the world. So, I'm getting better with it. Week 4's theme was all about us and having us in front of the camera, so I tried to come up with a creative way to do it.
