A spooky e-mail…

September 8, 2016

I shouldn’t look where?

I received a cryptic e-mail earlier this week from somebody named Tess. I don’t know Tess, but it seemed like she knew something about me.

Or at least what I shouldn’t do.

The e-mail only said one thing – “Don’t look under your bed”

Yikes!

Apparently, Tess has information that I needed to know, despite it being kind of hard to look under my bed (box spring on floor…), but either way, she was onto something.

Like… being careful.

So I got worried. What was I to do? Would I be safe? Would I make it through the next night? What would happen?

Heck, for that matter, would I make it to bed? See, I got this at 10:45 p.m., so I wasn’t even in bed yet.

Oh the humanity!

And then my fears got real.

Just one minute later, I received another e-mail from Tess. It appears she wasn’t playing around here – she was really letting me know what was going on.

I was shaking. My nerves were jumping. And I slowly clicked the e-mail to open it and this is what it said:

“Hahaha sorry wrong person it was a joke for someone else”

A joke to a wrong e-mail.

My life was almost over in the span of a minute. I was petrified out of my mind and Tess just waves it off as if that one minute didn’t totally alter somebody’s life.

Nothing.

Just a Hahaha and move on.

And now … I am left to wonder … was it really a joke? Or …

And then in Pennsylvania…

July 28, 2016

So …

I was on my way to a baseball game in Maryland last week, right?

And, because it’s a long drive, at one point I had to, ya know, go.

So I stopped at a rest area in Pennsylvania because, well, it was there when I had to go.

I got into the bathroom and all I saw was…

I was like “Son of a….”

And what you can’t see in this photo? The stall next to these urinals?

Also out of order.

A siesta at the Dunk

March 4, 2013

It’s the little things in life that mean the most.

No, no, no… I’m not going to quote the Zak Brown Band. I’m talking about the things that make you smile and know that doing something for a day was well worth it.

Let me backtrack a little here.

A few weeks ago, two of us ventured to Albany on an extremely cold and brisk Saturday evening. The goal was to capture some night photography for a 52-week challenge we both take part in. And, to be fair, Albany really is one of the best places for night photos in regard to places close to us. With the Empire State Plaza as a starting point, it’s a great area.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/29760317@N08/8482022225/in/photostream

Catching a couple o’ zzzzs at the Dunk.

I did mention it was cold, right?

The temperature seemed to be about 15-20 degrees, which isn’t that bad. But add in the wind and it was brutal at times.

So after a little more than an hour of snapping photos outside in this weather, it was decided it was time for a quick bite to eat. Alas, I obviously wasn’t up to spending a ton of money. A quick check on the phone showed a Dunkin’ Donuts being close by. Off we went.

As we started in, I saw this one gentleman. He looked like he was praying before eating. That’s nothing out of the blue, I’ve seen it times before. He had a newspaper, a cup of coffee and seemed content. But I saw every once in a while, he’d peer at somebody.

We ordered our food and sat across from this gentleman. He had looked at us once or twice. As we were eating, I heard it.

A loud snore.

Now I’ve been know to snag a siesta in odd sports, so I can’t blame the guy. When you’re tired, you’re tired. And, well, sometimes you just close the eyes for a moment or two and you’re out.

It still doesn’t take away from the humor.

Needless to say, we got a few laughs out of it. Especially when we heard a few more snores. Using the hashtag #dunkinsnore seemed appropriate.

A few moments later, one of the workers came out and checking to see how people were doing. She had a louder voice, so we were like “don’t wake the guy up.”

He must be a regular. She laughed and went over and said “Hey David, wake up!” And the guy, groggy and all, looked up. Must be a heck of a good place for a nap, then.

When we left, his head was back down.

Like I said, if you’re tired, you’re tired.

Hurt feelings: What happens when the chains talk back

January 21, 2013

(Note: For those who don’t know, I also run a disc golf blog — Rattling Chains. I have written some first-person posts over there that I think some readers here will enjoy, so I’m going to sprinkle them in every once in a while on a day when I’m coming up blank!)

By Disc G. Basket, Esq.

I’m sick of it.

You see, me and my brethren are sick and tired of you disc golfers treating us like crap or second-rate citizens.

Rattle those chains, you say. Make them sing, you say. Throw it harder and make it stick, you say.

A disc golf basket speaks up — and makes it known that rattling the chains is a painful thing!

Apparently, you don’t realize that we baskets feel what you are doing.

You don’t think it’s a coincidence that a perfect putt pops into the chains and then lands on the ground, do you?

We have to deal with a lot, you know.

Sometimes, we’ll have to smell some of that herbal stuff that some of you players bring around. You know, not all of us like to smell that stuff! And booze? How many times are you going to leave empty beer (or soda or something else) bottles in our baskets?

Our baskets aren’t made for that or other trash that people can leave behind. Now we realize that it’s not just disc golfers who leave stuff in our baskets, but they do.

People sometimes also sign us after we’re kind enough to allow an ace. Really? Sign your disc and move on. For those of you kind enough to come out and wipe all that graffiti off us, we thank you.

Back in the day, when we were first installed, we’d be treated like Kings and Queens.

Players would come by in awe of us. Kind of like a new baby. Unlike a baby, however, soon you were whipping pieces of plastic at us. Sometimes, there were sharp edges.

What the heck, dude?

You ever watch the ladies play? They treat us with respect. They don’t worry so much about the sound, rather getting it in the basket.

Most guys whip it at us. And if they miss? Then they slam it to us!

Aw, heck, who am I kidding? The ladies like to hear the chains sing as much as the guys. Maybe more.

That means I never get a break.

Sometimes, we just get so annoyed that we have to get even. One of my longtime chain buddies showed me this video — watch the disc. It’s going in. Until my buddy decided to mess with the thrower.

Tell me something. Would you just go up to another person and whip a piece of plastic into their face if it made the sound of chains?

If you did, you’d be looking at jail time.

But if you send a Star Destroyer or something into the chains, it’s OK to do. Some discs don’t hurt as much as others, I’ll admit that. I’m a fan of tap-in putts. Unfortunately, most of the time, people don’t have a tap-in.

I’m just looking for a little sympathy here.

We won’t get it, we know. Instead, you’ll keep firing the disc at us, just to hear that magical sound.

Look, I know the sound is awesome. After all, I am the one that makes that sound. It’s my chains. It’s my basket.

It’s not you, it’s me.

So think next time before you fire a disc into the chains. Remember, we have feelings to. And that stuff hurts!

But, if you do it and you think you have the perfect putt… well, just think for a moment as that disc hits the chains and bounces out.

Was it a bad shot?

Or am I getting even?

Self care is important. With work as stressful as Self care is important. With work as stressful as it usually is during this month, the little things can help you relax. I went this morning for a beard trim. It’s only 30-40 minutes, but it’s nice to have it done. A nice shaping, thinning it out a bit, a hot towel and a straight razor.

Nice.

In the world in which we live, little things like this can really be good for you. Maybe it’s a massage. Maybe it’s a therapy session. Maybe it’s a trip to the barber shop. But take care of yourself. It’s important.

A video looking at my first year and a half of owning a golden retriever, my first dog. It's had its ups and downs, but I've truly loved the ride and look forward to the future.

I hate being in front of the camera, but also realize sometimes it's not the worst thing in the world. So, I'm getting better with it. Week 4's theme was all about us and having us in front of the camera, so I tried to come up with a creative way to do it.
