Photo Blogging Challenge (Sept. 2014): Black and White

September 30, 2014

Going in the opposite direction of last month, we take the color away.

I’ve always been a fan of black and white photography. I used to have a darkroom and, when I started in newspapers, I worked in a darkroom. It was cool. Seeing images show up under the red light was way too cool.

Now, it’s digital.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the instant gratification. But there was something about the smell of the darkroom chemicals and having the control you had when processing images.

So this month we go back to the roots.

For that, I have three from my main camera (before it bit the dust… need to have fixed!) and a couple from my iPhone.

I am definitely interested in what others came up with for this theme.

And, as a reminder, we’re a fun little challenge community. So come back in a day or two and check everybody who linked up and drop a comment on each other’s posts… it makes it more fun. I’ll be making my rounds at the end of the weekend! Oh. and don’t forget to come back tomorrow (Oct. 1) to see the theme for October!

1. Cameron

There’s a good bet I’ll always find a way to get him into my photo blogging challenge, if I can make it fit the theme. And here is is… again!

Cam!

Cam!

 2. Nicole

On the opposite end of things, my niece is a senior in high school and in her final soccer season at her school. This was done during her senior night.

 3. Baseball

I had a great Summer of Baseball (still catching up on all those posts), bit hit one last game. I went by myself on a crisp night to watch Game 3 of the New York-Penn League championship.

Final game of the year.

4. Biff!

On my birthday, I went to a 2CW card and Biff Busick was there. He’s an excellent entertainer and I’ve enjoyed his work. Biff Rules!

Biff Rules!

Biff Rules!

5. Quiet spot

Went geocaching at the end of the month and one was in a cemetery. This one was sitting away from many other spots, in a peaceful area.

Quiet area.

Quiet area.

That’s my five for the month. And, now it’s your turn.

If you took part this month, make sure you link up below. And for those who participated, make sure you try and get to other people’s blogs and comment and visit so we can continue to grow this challenge. Don’t forget, too, to come back tomorrow, Wednesday, Oct. 1 and see the theme for October! NOTE: I set up a Facebook group for those who participate in the challenge and are interested. I’ll post any announcements there and hopefully it can be a place where things are discussed and some interaction etc. You can access it here.

Hi PJ – I like all the people pictures you’ve included this month. Viewing your choices for this post really made me think about how I don’t very often include people in my photographs. Maybe it’s because I don’t like to appear in photographs, or because I feel awkward about asking people if they mind if I take their photograph, or because I’m an introvert and find interacting with people to be tiring. The reason doesn’t really matter, but I’m going to try to be mindful of including people in more images starting now! Guess we’ll see in a month whether I have any success.

One other comment – I usually try to get a whole range of grey tones in my black and white photos. With the exception of your cemetery photograph I see you went more to the black and white ends of the spectrum. And it really worked well! Something else for me to think about. I like it when someone puts my brain to work, so thanks!

I seriously fell down on this challenge. I love B&W and enjoy processing, but I just didn’t like any of the images I took this month to even consider changing them to B&W. As I look back on my Flicker Stream, I only posted 12 photos for the month and only processed two in B&W. I shall strive to do better next month.

That being said, I like your first soccer photo the best of your set. It has the great tonal range that you like to see in B&W shots and has some great contrast to it.

I always enjoyed b/w photography. There is something more “classic” about it as it portrays more style and elegance. Just look at the old b/w studio shots of actors from the 30’s- 50′ golden era. Beautiful.

The soccer one is especially wonderful to me, having been at several “last games” as the boys each graduated. VERY VERY wonderful AND bittersweet. And of course… the geocaching grave one… MY FAVORITE!!! WHAT A FIND!

All fantastic captures this month…as usual. Cameron’s eyes are amazing and will break a lot of hearts when he’s older! I love the energy in the soccer and the Biff shots. I think the Quiet Area is perfect in black and white. Very reflective.

Self care is important. With work as stressful as Self care is important. With work as stressful as it usually is during this month, the little things can help you relax. I went this morning for a beard trim. It’s only 30-40 minutes, but it’s nice to have it done. A nice shaping, thinning it out a bit, a hot towel and a straight razor.

Nice.

In the world in which we live, little things like this can really be good for you. Maybe it’s a massage. Maybe it’s a therapy session. Maybe it’s a trip to the barber shop. But take care of yourself. It’s important.

And if you are in my area and need a trim or whatever — check out Chris (@studio11chris ) at @studio11barbersuite in Oneonta. Well worth it!

A video looking at my first year and a half of owning a golden retriever, my first dog. It's had its ups and downs, but I've truly loved the ride and look forward to the future.

I hate being in front of the camera, but also realize sometimes it's not the worst thing in the world. So, I'm getting better with it. Week 4's theme was all about us and having us in front of the camera, so I tried to come up with a creative way to do it.
