Setting out on a Lego adventure … maybe

October 12, 2016

When I was a kid, I didn’t have a lot of Legos.

For one, they were expensive. For two, they didn’t have a lot of the elaborate kits they have nowadays. That probably made it so I wasn’t as interested in them as I was say, Matchbox cars.

In recent years, I’ve given Legos to the kids of family and friends and it’s always fun to watch them put some of these crazy and cool sets together. I’ve also been to several Lego stores and I’m amazed at everyone you can buy and such. Heck, you can even buy just a few bricks here and there.

How great of a project would this be to build?

I got looking at a few Lego things last night and realized there’s some fun stuff out there. Some are so in-depth you really need to plan.

Kind of like the one baseball stadium I saw.

This is one of those things where I don’t think it would be a kid’s project. The stadium requires nearly 6,000 Lego pieces.

Yeah, you read that right.

So the directions for this project aren’t free. They’ll cost about $25, but it seems like some highly in-depth instructions. It also gives you every Lego you need. Luckily, one can do that by buying through Lego or a secondary market (such as Brick Link).

I never knew Legos had gotten this big.

And now I’m intrigued.

I really think I’d enjoy this project. So I’m going to print out the Lego sheet that shows everything you need. And I’m going to start pricing things out. I realize this project will cost a few hundred dollars when all said and done, but I think it will be something cool to do and I also think it’ll take a couple of years.

My plan would be to price things out and make sure everything is available. Then I’d look to buy the rarer pieces first and keep building, crossing off the pieces I pick up. Once I get everything, I’d then start the build and I think that’d take a while, too. A 6,000-piece Lego project wouldn’t be easy!

The final goal would then be to get enough Lego mini figures to fill up the stands (so an added cost) and when everything is done, I’d have a pretty cool item to display with other baseball things.

In the end, I might decide it’s too expensive of a project to do, but it’s something I’m going to look into over the fall/winter to see if it’s something I could do. And if so, it’ll be time to start looking into building the collection of Legos and storing them in a safe place as these won’t be to have and throw out there and “play” with.

I don’t think something of this magnitude is anything different than a model or a puzzle or anything like that. It’s a project that would take time and have a pretty cool payoff when all said and done.

This is a great, long-term project. I recommend starting with getting a parts list – hopefully this is available without purchasing the detail instructions. Then you could use a site like Brick Link to get a rough estimate of what it might cost to purchase all those bricks and would have some idea what the upper end of the cost range would be.

If you decided at that point to go ahead, some of the best Lego bargains in our part of the world can be found through Kijiji (online classified ad service) or garage sales, usually large mixed bins of parts, so you might want to take a couple of tries at purchasing large quantities of bricks this way before going to an online brick (re)seller. For the less common parts, you may have no choice but to buy direct from Lego’s online store.

Interested to watch how this progresses. Good luck!

Thanks for the thoughts and ideas. I am going to undertake this one, as well as another one. I think I will have a lot of fun with it. The parts list is, indeed, there for free. I’ll eventually have to get the instructions, though. I realize this is going to be a long-term project and investment. I’ll get the pieces little by little and that will be the early part. I know there are several online places to get the single pieces, so I’ll be working on it as I go along. I think it will be somewhat therapeutic for me as it will give me something to focus on here and there for an hour at a time. It might take me a year or more to complete and get everything, but I look forward to the challenge and the enjoyment of it.

The other thing I am working on is a hot dog store, with directions from the same place.

Self care is important. With work as stressful as Self care is important. With work as stressful as it usually is during this month, the little things can help you relax. I went this morning for a beard trim. It’s only 30-40 minutes, but it’s nice to have it done. A nice shaping, thinning it out a bit, a hot towel and a straight razor.

Nice.

In the world in which we live, little things like this can really be good for you. Maybe it’s a massage. Maybe it’s a therapy session. Maybe it’s a trip to the barber shop. But take care of yourself. It’s important.

And if you are in my area and need a trim or whatever — check out Chris (@studio11chris ) at @studio11barbersuite in Oneonta. Well worth it!

A video looking at my first year and a half of owning a golden retriever, my first dog. It's had its ups and downs, but I've truly loved the ride and look forward to the future.

I hate being in front of the camera, but also realize sometimes it's not the worst thing in the world. So, I'm getting better with it. Week 4's theme was all about us and having us in front of the camera, so I tried to come up with a creative way to do it.
