Experiencing Portland’s Voodoo Doughnut

September 7, 2015

The famous pink box!

The famous pink box!

If you are a fan of any of the food shows out there — be it the Food Network, Cooking channel, Travel, network television etc., I’m sure you can relate to wanting to try places you’ve seen.

I’m most certainly the same way.

Unfortunately, I don’t always plan it out well enough to hit these places, but I’ve had a chance to visit a few.

Yum!

Yum!

One of those chances happened recently on a trip to the Pacific Northwest. Though based mainly in the Seattle area, a day trip was planned to Portland. And part of that trip?

Voodoo Doughnut.

Voodoo has been on many television shows, including ones on the Travel Channel and the Cooking Network. The Portland hotspot is known for eclectic delights, a bright look and interesting flavors.

I wasn’t disappointed.

Sometimes, places like this — ones that become “destinations” of sorts for foodies or other travelers won’t live up to the hype. They branch out, become big and the quality suffers. That doesn’t seem to be the case at Voodoo, at least by my experience.

The original was the spot I needed to hit. When arriving, the line wasn’t too long and I’d estimate I was in an ordering within 30 minutes or so, which wasn’t bad in my eyes.

At the original in downtown Portland.

At the original in downtown Portland.

TIP: Pull out that smart phone and access their menu via their website. By doing so, you give yourself a chance to look at the menu, see what the doughnuts they offer are and have a good idea in mind, so once you get to the counter, you can order.

When we were walking out, the line was much longer.

Inside is a doughnut-lovers heaven.

There many of the famous pink boxes ready to house your doughnuts. There are showcases of the many magnificent creations. The back looks very busy and there are racks and racks of doughnuts that the workers grab. Everybody seemed so happy, too, which always makes for a great experience. I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted when I went to order.

One note — this isn’t Dunkin’ Donuts. By that I mean, you don’t get a dozen for five bucks. The doughnuts are priced depending on what you are getting. There are different sizes of some of these (there was one that was massively huge — I decided it was in my best interest to skip that one!), so that means the price of the six you get could be different from the next person etc.

One of Voodoo's most famous creations!

I ended up getting six or so, figuring I’d have them throughout the trip to Seattle. That meant I had the chance to test several different ones, and I really enjoyed each of them.

TIP: When getting your doughnuts, take a chance. Ask the person serving you his or her favorite doughnut and grab one. You might find yourself a great surprise. I did this and the one the girl chose was fantastic.

Despite a dreary sort of day (it was overcast and had drizzled once or twice — but that’s fine as in Seattle that day were thunderstorms, so we avoided the one bad day of weather during the Seattle trip), sitting outside and biting into one of these creations was delightful.

I fully enjoyed the experience at Voodoo and would totally recommend it. The doughnuts are delicious and the people were friendly and helpful. Definitely worth the stop.

30-2 Days of Writing/Life with Earl: Whatever, dude (17/28)

February 17, 2013

Life With Earl is a semi-regular feature on A ‘lil HooHaa. For the back story, click “Earl” at the top of the page to see past stories. This is a shorter version of Earl than I’d normally do… but Earl was in a bit of a rush today.

Oh, Earl.

For those who don’t know Earl, allow me to tell you something about him — he loves donuts. When I say love, I mean full-out, unadulterated, unhealthy love.

There are often times we meet Earl at the local Dunkin’ Donuts to chat about what’s going on in the world.

Sometimes, though, it can be hard to absorb Earl’s obsession with donuts.

See, whenever Earl finds out about something — like when it’s time to make the donuts — he’ll go off into an excited tangent. That usually means one of us — me, Jay or the Big Easy — will be getting a call exclaiming pure excitement about the donut and Earl’s love of said donut.

That’s why the early morning wakeup call both surprised me and didn’t surprise me.

“WOOOOOO WEEEEE P.J.!! THERE”S A NEW DONUT!”

“Hi, Earl. Thanks for waking me up for that news report.”

“THERE’S RED VELVET DONUTS AT THE DUNK! RED VELVET! DID YOU HEAR ME? RED VELVET!!”

“I heard you, Earl. No need to shout. It’s six a.m. on a Sunday for goodness sake.”

“THIS IS AWESOME THOUGH!”

“Earl, calm down. It’s red velvet. You realize it’s a cake with some food coloring, right? And I think that donut has been out for a few months. I thought it left with the holidays?”

“NO WAY DUDE! I JUST SAW THE SIGN IN THE WINDOW! WE NEED TO GO!”

Usually, I’m all about meeting up with Earl. See, Earl is a constant source of entertainment for those who know him. And, well, even for some who don’t know him. And, often when he calls, we’ll all get together and go see Earl because we never know what’s on his mind.

This time wasn’t one of them.

Especially at 6 a.m.

Over a donut that may or may not still be in production. But the sign says different.

I just couldn’t handle Earl at this moment. And I needed to get rid of him and turn the phone on silent. So I did it quick.

“Whatever, dude.”

Self care is important. With work as stressful as Self care is important. With work as stressful as it usually is during this month, the little things can help you relax. I went this morning for a beard trim. It’s only 30-40 minutes, but it’s nice to have it done. A nice shaping, thinning it out a bit, a hot towel and a straight razor.

Nice.

In the world in which we live, little things like this can really be good for you. Maybe it’s a massage. Maybe it’s a therapy session. Maybe it’s a trip to the barber shop. But take care of yourself. It’s important.

A video looking at my first year and a half of owning a golden retriever, my first dog. It's had its ups and downs, but I've truly loved the ride and look forward to the future.

I hate being in front of the camera, but also realize sometimes it's not the worst thing in the world. So, I'm getting better with it. Week 4's theme was all about us and having us in front of the camera, so I tried to come up with a creative way to do it.
